In the wake of Hurricane Sandy the only thing anyone in the war torn tri-state area can do is hold up their smart phones for occasional reception, stare around at the mass chaos streets splattered with trees, and eat Chinese Food. After days without power and heat, the egg drop soup never tasted so good. You can imagine that all of us are looking for something to hold on to, to feel better about what just happened around us in a flash.
I have spent the week hearing peoples stories. Last minute evacuations, houses flooded, trees totaling three family cars, and in the midst of it all everyone seems to manage a smile. It is at these moments in life that I think-how lucky I am, how special life is, and that my problems are small little blips on the universal radar. Not to get all schmalzy in this dizzying aftermath but to quote an elderly person I see on a daily basis "I am blessed". If only that feeling state could somehow creep into the brains of those individuals getting into fist fights on the gas lines we'd be in a good place.
I feel like this fortune makes sense. The past is the past and it happened-but as we look ahead, it's going to be ok and as the days pass by the useless details will become ancient history.
Now pass the egg rolls.
